Kavinsky-Sega Genesis

Been listening to Kavinsky’s new album “Outrun”, which is awesome. I believe that out of the three albums that he’s released it is his best, I think it best exemplifies what is great about his music which is the synthesized 80’s feel. The idea for this illustration came about when I re watched Drive and watched Lets Plays of the indie game Hotline Miami, both of which have that “Cool” 80’s feel to them both in atmosphere and presentation. I tried hard to ape or at least come close to the aping the feel from his animated music video “Dead Cruiser”. I will say that ever since seeing that music video, I have been wanting an animated series created for his character, and it preferably be animated by Titmouse Inc.

When I was thinking about ways I could re imagine the Kavinsky character as a video game persona I started thinking of throwback games such as Streets of Rage or Final fight, which is where some of the design of the illustration comes from especially the Sega Genesis ephemera. When coming up for enemies that his character could fight in a fictional game I was using Final FIght as a reference mainly because seeing as how ridiculous his character is the villains could be as ridiculous as him. The villains in this piece as stated before are mainly from final fight 2 so there is some resemblance to Rolento, Sodom, and Abigail.
